JOURNAL #4 – Leading Lines / Implied Diagonals #5 due

Objects in a composition that draw the viewer INTO the photo and perhaps to the center of interest are called leading lines. Certain compositions can have a line that leads you from corner to corner diagonally, this is called an implied diagonal and often makes for a well balanced composition. Find 5 pictures for your journal that clearly shows this technique.

My favorite image was the first one because i like how the girl and the dog are bonding while they are both looking on the computer screen. They both are non centered which is great for this journal assignment. The carpet that they are laying on brings out the contrast of the picture, it looks very bright and cheerful.I like how the background isnt as bright as the person because then it brings them out a lot more.

JOURNAL #2 – Low depth of field / High depth of field #2 due

A loss of sharpness in the background is what we call background simplified. This is done by lowering what we call “depth of field”. Your picture choices should have a lack of focus or look soft and blurry in the background. When a photograph is detailed and both the background and the foreground are in focus, it is called a high “depth of field“. We can adjust the depth of field by changing the “f - stop” on our camera exposures. The higher f stop = higher depth of field and visa versa. Find 6 pictures for your journal; a combination of still life, portraits, cityscapes, and landscapes that have 3 images with low depth of field and 3 images with a high depth of field.

JOURNAL #1 – Light as Subject Matter

Particularly in Black and White Photography, the use of light and shadow can simply create a design and be the focus of the image. Have you ever seen interesting designs in your environment that have been created by light? Think of reflection, shadow, light vs. dark. Find three images that interest you and have utilized light as subject matter. Write a short paragraph for each image where you discuss why you are interested in this image, the design, and how light is the subject matter.

In the photo with the girl, demonstrates a reflection. In the image she is walking on a thin piece of branch on the water which reflects off the water in projecting a reflection off the water. The subject matter is the girl and the reflection
In the next photo its more of a light verses dark situation, the light comes out of the trees.
The last photo is more of a shadow.
